Triggers are the starting point of every flow. They define the fan action that kicks off your automation. When a fan does the thing your trigger is listening for, they get enrolled in the flow and start moving through your sequence of actions, delays, and conditions. Fanaura offers 25+ trigger types spanning music, tours, merch, communication channels, Instagram, and more. Here is every one of them.
Each flow can have one trigger (or no trigger for flows entered via Go-to-Flow). Keep flows focused with a single trigger for easier debugging.

Music Triggers

These triggers fire when fans interact with your music releases.
Fires when a fan clicks your presave link and completes the presave action on Spotify, Apple Music, or other connected DSPs.When to use: Pre-Release stage flows. Build thank-you sequences, share exclusive content with presave fans, or count down to release day.Example: Fan presaves your single on Spotify. Trigger fires. Fan receives a thank-you email with an exclusive acoustic snippet.
Fires when a fan plays your track on a connected streaming platform (e.g., Spotify play detected). When to use: Release and Post-Release stages. Reward active listeners, encourage playlist adds, or track streaming engagement.Example: Fan streams your new album track. Trigger fires. Fan receives an SMS: “Thanks for listening! Add it to your playlist?”

Tour Triggers

These triggers fire when fans interact with your tour and event listings.
Fires when a fan submits an RSVP for one of your shows or tour dates. When to use: Pre-Sale stage. Nurture RSVP’d fans toward ticket purchase with presale codes and reminders.Example: Fan RSVPs for your Chicago show. Trigger fires. Fan receives a presale code via email 24 hours before tickets go live.

Merch Triggers

These triggers fire when fans interact with your merch.
Fires when a fan completes a merch purchase through your connected store (Shopify, etc.).When to use: Any stage. Send order confirmations, thank-you messages, cross-sell related items, or request reviews.Example: Fan buys a tour hoodie. Trigger fires. Fan receives a thank-you email with a 10% discount code for their next purchase.
Fires when a fan adds merch to their cart but does not complete checkout within a specified time window. When to use: On-Sale stage. Recover abandoned carts with reminder messages and potential incentives.Example: Fan adds a t-shirt to their cart, leaves without purchasing. Trigger fires after 1 hour. Fan receives an email: “You left something behind! Complete your order and get free shipping.”

Communication Triggers

These triggers fire based on fan interactions with your messages.
Fires when a fan opens an email you sent through Fanaura. When to use: Post-action follow-ups. Identify engaged fans and send them additional content.Example: Fan opens your release announcement email. Trigger fires. Fan is tagged as “engaged” and entered into a VIP follow-up sequence.
Fires when a fan sends an SMS reply to your provisioned phone number. When to use: Two-way SMS conversations, keyword-based automations, opt-in confirmations.Example: Fan texts “TOUR” to your number. Trigger fires (with keyword filter for “TOUR”). Fan receives a list of upcoming tour dates.
Fires when a fan opts in to receive SMS messages from you (updates their SMS opt-in to enabled). When to use: Welcome sequences for new SMS subscribers.Example: Fan texts “JOIN” to opt in. Trigger fires. Fan receives a welcome text followed by a series of drip messages over the next week.

Instagram Triggers

These triggers fire based on fan interactions on Instagram. Your Instagram account must be connected via the Integrations page.
Your Instagram account must be connected via the Integrations page before these triggers will work. You need an Instagram Business or Creator account with a connected Facebook Page.
Fires when a fan sends you a direct message on Instagram. When to use: Auto-responders, keyword-based content delivery, lead capture.Configuration: Add keyword matching rules to respond only to specific messages. Supports exact match, contains, starts_with, and AI intent detection.Example: Fan DMs you “PRESAVE.” Trigger fires (keyword filter: contains “presave”). Fan receives an automatic DM with your presave link.
Fires when a fan comments on one of your Instagram posts. When to use: Comment-to-DM automations. A fan comments a keyword, and you auto-DM them with a link.Example: Fan comments “LINK” on your new single announcement post. Trigger fires. Fan receives an Instagram DM with the streaming link.
Fires when a fan comments on one of your Instagram Reels. When to use: Same as post comments but for Reels content. Great for viral content where you want to capture engagement.Example: Fan comments “fire” on your music video Reel. Trigger fires. Fan receives a DM: “Thanks for the love! Here’s the full track.”
Fires when a fan comments during one of your Instagram Lives. When to use: Capture engagement from live viewers and follow up afterward.Example: During a live listening party, fans comment “ALBUM.” Trigger fires. After the live ends, fans receive a DM with the album link.
Fires when a fan tags your account in their Instagram Story. When to use: Reward fans who promote you organically. Send thank-you DMs or exclusive content.Example: Fan shares your music in their Story and tags you. Trigger fires. Fan receives a DM: “Thanks for sharing! Here’s an unreleased snippet just for you.”
Fires when a fan sends a reply to one of your Instagram Stories. When to use: Engage with fans who interact with your Story content.Example: You post a Story asking “What city should I tour next?” A fan replies “Nashville.” Trigger fires. Fan receives a DM with a link to sign up for tour notifications.

Other Triggers

Fires when a fan is added to one of your fan lists (either manually or through another automation). When to use: List-specific welcome sequences or segmented follow-ups.Example: Fan is added to your “VIP Fans” list. Trigger fires. Fan receives an exclusive welcome email with VIP perks.
Fires when a fan joins one of your Extras (exclusive content, events, or experiences). When to use: Deliver the Extra content and follow up with related offers.Example: Fan joins your “Early Access Listening Room” Extra. Trigger fires. Fan receives the private listening link via email.
Fires when a presave action is fully confirmed and completed (as opposed to just initiated). When to use: Verified presave follow-ups where you want to ensure the presave actually went through.
Fires when a brand-new fan creates their profile in your Fanaura system for the first time. When to use: Universal welcome sequences that greet every new fan regardless of how they found you.Example: A new fan signs up via your website embed. Trigger fires. Fan enters a 7-day welcome drip sequence introducing them to your music, upcoming shows, and merch.
This is a special trigger that does not fire automatically. Instead, you manually enroll fans into the flow from the Enrollment tab or via bulk actions on the Fans page. When to use: One-time sends to specific fans, testing, or special occasions.Example: You want to send a personal thank-you sequence to 50 fans who attended a private show. Manually enroll them and the flow handles the rest.

Trigger Filters

Most triggers can be enhanced with filters that narrow down which fans actually enter the flow.
For Instagram DM and SMS triggers, you can specify keyword rules:
  • Exact: The message must match the keyword exactly (e.g., “PRESAVE”)
  • Contains: The message must contain the keyword anywhere (e.g., message includes “presave”)
  • Starts With: The message must begin with the keyword
  • AI Intent: Uses AI to detect the meaning behind the message, even if the wording is different. A fan saying “I want to save the new song” would match an intent for “presave”
Use AI Intent for DM triggers. Fans rarely type exact keywords — AI intent catches natural language variations like “I wanna presave” or “save the new track for me.”

Tips and Best Practices

Use AI intent for DMs — fans rarely type exact keywords. AI intent catches natural language variations.
Before activating, visit the Active Triggers Overview to make sure your trigger does not conflict with other active flows.
  • One trigger per flow: Keeps flows focused and easy to debug
  • Combine triggers with filters: “Fan sends IG DM” is broad. “Fan sends IG DM containing PRESAVE” is targeted.
  • Test Instagram triggers: Instagram’s 24-hour messaging window can be tricky. Test with a personal account first.
